  • Jewelry Appraisals

Thurber’s Jewelers is pleased to give you an appraisal valuation of your jewelry for insurance or estate purposes. We also will be glad to update existing appraisals to current values at a discounted rate.Measurements and metal weights are taken, gemstone weights are calculated by a formula, and gemstone quality is inspected. The piece is then described, with the features listed and the photograph printed directly on the appraisal. Generally, an appraisal requires seven business days, depending on the number of pieces included and the current workload on the schedule. If there is a large quantity of items to be appraised, we kindly request that only a few items are left per visit or allow adequate time to complete. A multiple item discount is available. If you have previous paperwork on your jewelry item, please bring copies along with you, as they will reduce the amount of time necessary to complete the process, and sometimes reduce the appraisal fees.In reference to Gemstone Lab Certifications, please bring the original certification at the time of jewelry drop off. We will photocopy the certificate and then include Lab report numbers in the appraisal, to ensure complete accuracy on the appraisal document.

  • Custom Design

Thurber’s Jewelers is highly regarded for their custom designed jewelry. Often, a client has gemstones they would like to reset. Sometimes, these gemstones will fit into rings or other pieces of jewelry we feature in our jewelry cases or may be available through our jewelry partners. Other times, the jewelry must be made by hand to accommodate their gemstones. Also, a client may like particular features of various pieces. We can combine these features into one piece by creating a new design. Our clients sometimes also have a dream ring or jewelry piece which requires new gemstones. We can also provide a selection of gemstones to choose from in these cases. Clients are welcome to bring in drawings or photos to show us exactly what they have in mind. Otherwise, we can suggest certain ideas based on a particular concept. The concept is discussed, and occasionally drawn on paper, and gemstones are laid out to reflect the finished product. The customer can then approve the design based on the discussions and drawings. More frequently, computer technology is used in the process. The CAD-CAM technique involves the use of a computer to make a drawing of the design concept. These computer drawings are shared and discussed with the client. At this time, certain aspects can be tweaked. Upon approval, the computer will grow a wax model, and then the jewelry piece is casted through the lost-wax process. The casting is then prepared for finishing, gemstones are set, and the piece is polished. Any special finishes like satin or hammered finishes are applied. The item is then presented to the customer. Before finalizing a project and moving it forward into production all custom designs are estimated within a certain range of price. Typically an initial consulting deposit of $100 is required before all computer drawings are begun. If the project is completed, this consulting deposit is applied to the final price of the custom piece. In the event the client chooses not to have the piece made they will receive their deposit back in the form of an in-store credit. We require a minimum of a 25% deposit of the estimated price before beginning the casting process. With the use of drawings and discussions, and especially in cases of preparation of a wax sample of the piece, there are no surprises in relation to how the piece will look. Although we have completed projects in less than two weeks in the past, we would appreciate as much time as possible, preferably 3 to 4 weeks once the final production process begins. Masterpieces take time!

  • Jewelry Repair

At Thurber’s Jewelers, we understand the importance of your jewelry and look forward to restoring your jewelry item to its previous glory. Free inspection and cleaning We suggest bringing in your jewelry to be inspected for loose stones, or damaged mountings on an every two to three months basis. We will clean and inspect your jewelry at no charge, while you wait. This extra care in advance can save a lot on expense, aggravation, and time in the long run. At take-in, your repair is evaluated and various options are discussed. We inspect the jewelry item thoroughly and suggest ways to prevent future problems. Once an agreeable procedure has been decided, a description of the piece is taken and printed out on the receipt. The tasks are put into the computer at the same time and are also printed on the receipt. We always provide an estimate as to the expected cost to complete the process prior to the work being started unless not requested. The repair process overall may take anywhere from one week to three weeks, depending on the complexity of the project and the availability of parts which may be needed. We request that a rush order or a specific date requirement is discussed at take-in. Rush orders may be subject to additional fees. We use the latest technology and materials to perform the repair at hand. Laser machine equipment welds metals with full metal parts, not under-karat solder. The weld is a stronger, more durable procedure than torch repairs. We guarantee everything we repair, rebuild, or modify for 6 months from the date of delivery unless otherwise notated here or in writing to the customer. This guarantee applies to actual spot that was repaired in the past. There is a minimum charge of $15 for all repair work which is taken into the shop.

  • Ring Sizing

We offer free ring sizing on any ring which has been purchased through our store. If we size a ring to a customer’s “requested” size and that size is incorrect, we will have to charge again to resize the ring. We can only guarantee our ring sizing from the customer’s finger. We cannot be given another ring to go by for size and be accurate. We will do so only per a customer’s request.

  • Watch Repairs and Batteries

We offer free estimates on most watch repairs. Watch repairs are guaranteed for 6 months on the work we perform. We are unable to warranty work if the watch is unable to seal out water and dust, a problem for watches. We offer free battery replacement for life on any watch purchased through our store. All other watch batteries are guaranteed for a minimum of one year.

  • We Buy Gold

At Thurber’s Jewelers we understand that trying to sell platinum, gold, and silver jewelry can seem confusing or even intimidating. But you don’t have to worry about that with us. Our entire process is specifically tailored to make you feel comfortable and give you the knowledge that you need as a consumer to know you are getting top dollar when you sell your valuable jewelry items. You don’t need to make an appointment to visit us, just walk in. If we are already with other customers, you can relax in our showroom. We won’t be long. As we begin the process of sorting your jewelry, flatware, and other items, we will explain to you everything about what we are doing. The first step of our process is to sort through your precious metals and other items. We separate jewelry into different groups to sort them into their gold karat (10k, 14k, etc.) or separate them as sterling silver. Often, your jewelry will be stamped with a karat marking and designer stamp that we recognize, and we will not have to test your pieces. But if there is no marking, or the marking looks “suspicious” (perhaps added on after the piece was made), then we need to make sure the pieces are authentic and determine what their purity is. This may require us to “test” the jewelry items. The testing we typically do will not damage your item or we will ask permission to proceed. Once we have determined what pieces you have, we can figure out what they are worth. We will begin by telling you what the current prices of gold and silver are, and then weigh each karat group, telling you the purity, and telling you what it weighs. Using that information, we will make you an offer. As a transparent business, we are always happy to go over the numbers with you and explain how the price of gold or silver translates into the offer you are getting. If, or when, you accept our offer, we will then ask you for a photo ID. A copy of your photo ID will be taken to attach to our store receipt. Once that is taken care of we will pay you for your items in either cash or check, depending on the amount.
